Touring Superleggera’s “Dodge” Maserati 3500 GT: Designed Then, Restored Today

Under a canopy of trees along the  picturesque castello near Milan, the gleaming bianco beauty of a 1959 Maserati 3500 GT captures the winter sunlight.

Thanks to the efforts of Touring’s Classic department, this glinting masterpiece, meticulously restored, is now ready to continue to shine as icon of the golden age of grand touring. The thrill of beholding this exquisite vehicle is only matched by the profound respect for the craftsmanship that brought it back to life.

The Maserati 3500 GT, first introduced in 1957, marked Maserati’s transition from racing cars to luxury Grand Tourers. Touring Superleggera’s “Superleggera” construction- lightweight aluminum bodywork over a tubular steel frame – revolutionized automotive design, making the 3500 GT a coveted symbol of elegance and performance.

It was a car beloved by the era’s elite, including Hollywood legends and industrial titans, becoming an icon of 1950s sophistication and innovation.

The restoration of this Maserati 3500 GT exemplifies Touring’s uncompromising dedication to authenticity.

A former treasure of Horace Elgin Dodge III of the famed Dodge dynasty, underwent an exhaustive process to restore its original glory. From the intricate bodywork to the mechanical precision, every element was painstakingly revived.

Historical research revealed the car’s original configuration and journey, ensuring the restoration respected its unique heritage.

Our classic team collaborated with Candini Classiche, to overhaul the engine and mechanical components.

The meticulous attention to detail extended to sourcing missing original parts, repairing the body with precision, and applying period-correct finishes.

Master craftsmen at Touring meticulously rebuilt the car, from shaping new metal components to correcting minor structural misalignments, ensuring a seamless finish.

The final paint application—a direct lacquer topcoat typical of its era—was hand-sanded and polished with the outmost care and attention, highlighting the car’s exquisite curves and chrome accents.

The Maserati 3500 GT embodies the spirit of an era when luxury and performance converged to create enduring masterpieces. Touring’s efforts preserve this legacy, ensuring that the artistry and craftsmanship of the past inspire future generations.

Visitors to Retromobile will witness this restored 1959 Maserati 3500 GT alongside an unrestored 1961 barn-find example. This juxtaposition highlights Touring’s transformative power, showcasing the journey from untouched relic to restored glory.
